Nothing has embarrassed and worried corporate America in recent years the way anonymous employee blogging has. In fact if executives have nightmares and wake up in the middle of the night in panic and sweating, then that nightmare is bound to be about employees blogging some devastating corporate secrets.
These anonymous tell-all blogs always manage to pick up huge audiences within a very short time. In recent times, internal tensions within well known companies have quickly become public knowledge. A few of these companies have made things worse by firing these bloggers when they have been discovered, only for them to become celebrities and to quickly land plum jobs elsewhere, leaving their previous employer suffering backlash from the public.
But even as we dread the anonymous and damaging blogging, it is useful to ask a few questions.
For instance, what drives an employee to anonymous blogging? What kind of corporate environment forces the hand of this new breed of blogger?
These are interesting questions that should be answered with great honesty by many company executives in these organizations that have suffered damage from bloggers within. And more so from many others who fear just such a repercussion. This is because many of these blogs are really about ideas for improvements at the companies. Many of the ideas brought forward seem to be workable and the sort of great suggestions that many corporations can greatly benefit from.
While we cannot rule out some of the bloggers being nothing more than troublemakers, it is important to ask ourselves if we have done enough to create an environment that allows for the free flow of ideas from our people without victimization. Or have we just paid lip service to the process. Why should an employee with an open line of communication in the company choose instead to go the route of the anonymous blogger?
There is a lot that anonymous blogging is saying to corporate America. But are we listening?

To play or not to play? The question pertains to this week’s Bellsouth Classic for those players who are scheduled to compete in The Masters next week. Fine tuning their game at Sugarloaf or at the range is the decision that needs to be made for the majority of the 103 players teeing it up at the season’s first major. It seems to be a split decision for the world’s best at least as 10 of the top 20 in the World Golf Rankings will be teeing it up in Duluth.
However, only two of the top eight players are playing this week, Retief Goosen and defending Bellsouth champion Phil Mickelson. Mickelson won in 2005 on Monday in a five-man playoff which culminated a rain soaked week that forced a 54-hole shortened event. The weather should not be a factor this week for the 144-player field vying for the rather generous $954,000 first place prize.
Mickelson is still searching for his first win of the 2006 season although the year has not been bad as proven by his four top-ten finishes. Mickelson is a two-time winner at the Bellsouth, both coming in playoffs, and has finished 10th or better in six of his eight starts including four top three finishes. He is the odds on favorite this week at 7-1 to capture his third championship.
Retief Goosen is right behind Mickelson at 8-1 and his game looks to be a great shape heading into The Masters. Goosen won this event in 2002 and followed that up with a tie for 3rd in 2003. He finished 22nd in last year’s edition after skipping the event in 2004. He has performed well in his four starts in 2006 with two top five finishes and a tie for 15th at the Ford.
Luke Donald and David Toms are the next closest players at 15-1 and both share some common traits. The pair has gotten off to great starts this season, each picking up a win and each having numerous top tens, Toms with four and Donald with three. Neither Toms nor Donald played at the Bellsouth last year and both come in without a ton of confidence after missing the cut at THE PLAYERS last week.
Arguably the least confident player this week is Davis Love III who went from tournament leader last week on Thursday to missing the cut on Friday after a second round 83. It’s a good decision to play here following that debacle as entering The Masters with something other than that 83 will be important. He has not teed it up at Sugarloaf since missing the cut in 2002 but does have 7th and 11th place finishes to his credit.
Love is listed at 20-1 along with Padraig Harrington, who also missed the cut at Sawgrass last week. Harrington did not play this event in 2005 after finishing 4th in 2004 and 8th in 2002. Also in at 20-1 is Chris DiMarco who was forced to withdraw last week at THE PLAYERS due to a rib injury. He does not have a top ten in stroke play this season but he does have three top tens in his last six starts at Sugarloaf.

In a recent article I explained that scripting conversations is inescapable, inevitable. You’ll either use one unconsciously, from memory, or explicitly, having written it down.
Presuming you write it down, which is a really good idea, you can now focus on improving your delivery, your vocal nuances, so it doesn’t sound artificial.
If you ask most tele-reps why they don’t like scripts, they’ll respond that they don’t want to sound canned, believing that one naturally follows from the other.
Not true.
A few years ago, actor James Earl Jones did a radio commercial for a restaurant chain. He simply read from its menu, using his wonderful training to make each item sound stupendous. (As you know, Mr. Jones is the deep, resonant, Darth Vader voice in “Star Wars.”)
The ad proved that it isn’t what you say, i.e. the quality of your script, that alone determines your impact. Performing it well, bringing it to life, is just as important.
So, here are some quick pointers on script reading that actors will also appreciate when they go to auditions for cold readings:
(1) Read the script one phrase at a time; not one word at a time.
When we speak spontaneously, in everyday conversations, we use phrases, and express them as entire units. Stopping to utter words as individual units slows us down and makes our language sound stilted.
(2) Breathe in the middle of a phrase, not at the end.
Again, when we speak spontaneously, we breathe in the middle of ideas. By breathing only at the end, you signal that you are reading, and your listener will discount what you’re saying as contrived.
(3) Vary your tones.
Poor script readers sound mono-tonal, and this is generally artificial, unless we’re genuine geeks or police dispatchers who follow a cultural code in restricting their voices to narrow ranges.
Let your voice rise and fall, from high to low, and from soft to louder. This is what we do in everyday conversation, so let’s carry it over to reading scripts.
(4) Get over the fact that the script’s language isn’t your everyday language.
It’s better, crafted for persuasion, not chitchat or recreational conversation. So, you didn’t write it, no big deal. You can still make it yours by repeating it and by making it sound spontaneous. In fact, once you’ve said it 100 times, it will seem second nature to you.
These are some of the ways in which you can tackle the task of making a script come to life. Remember, real professionals do this, whether they’re Broadway actors or your favorite classroom teachers.

Spread betting is a very popular form of betting nowadays but it
can be difficult to understand how much built in profit there
are in the prices offered. The reason is simple, the concept
spreads is not so easy to understand. With normal bets a stake
is placed on an event, this stake is the amount of risk taken by
the punter in his financial enjoyment of the outcome of the
event.
With spreads this is not the case, the amount that is won or
lost is derived by a multiplier value chosen by the punter (i.e.
the stake). The punter then wins or loses an amount that is the
product of the stake multiplied by how right or wrong the punter
was in his assessment of the outcome.
An example best clarifies this, a bookie proposes a spread of
0.9-1.1 for a future football match - Manu
versus Blackburn. The punter can choose that the goal difference
derived by the result (Manu score - Blackburn score) will be
lower that 0.9 or higher than 1.1. Suppose the punter correctly
chooses higher than 1.1 at a stake of £2. The final score is
Manu 3, Blackburn 1. The goal difference is 3-1=2. The punter
wins 2 - 1.1 = 0.9 goal difference * £2 giving a profit of £1.80.
Consequently it can be seen that the built in advantage of the
bookie can be calculated by assuming a situation where both
higher than, and lower than, bets are taken at a token value of
£1 each way. Regardless of the outcome the punter will lose £0.2
for an investment of £2.
The built in profit margin (in this case) is therefore is 100 *
(0.2/1.0) = 10%
Generally the built in profit is 10-15%. This means that your
assessment of events has to be about 15-20% more accurate than
the layers, and they are professionals!

Helping your young acting hopeful prepare for a successful
acting career can be an incredibly rewarding experience for the
parent. All parents like seeing their children being creative,
expressing themselves, and, most importantly, having fun.
It should be stated, however, that forcing a child to
participate in any pursuit they don’t like is not just
counterproductive but harmful to the child. Your role, as the
acting hopeful’s parent, is to caringly nurture your children’s
expressed interests and not force them into a pursuit in order
to live vicariously through them. One would have to be born
under a rock to have missed some of the more public examples of
what can happen when children are forced into an acting career
they never wanted.
That being said, there are some very simple pointers you can
follow that will have a powerful impact in the immediate sense
and create long-term opportunities for the professional acting
success of your son or daughter.
Start Early: Human beings, it would seem, are all natural born
actors. Early in their lives, they often spend entire afternoons
play-acting imaginary scenarios. Sadly, as many of us get older,
we forget how much fun acting can be. By exposing your
youngsters, at an early age, to the concept of acting, you are,
in effect, introducing them to something at which they are
already. Regardless of whether it’s soccer, football, chess, or
acting, childhood pursuits should always be fun. By giving your
children an early glimpse of acting while they are young and
predisposed to the concept, you dramatically increase the odds
of their long-term success. Acting Camps provide the perfect
vehicle for your children to immerse themselves in the creative
fun acting can provide. What they gain from the camp experience
has as much to do with you, the parent, as it does the camp
itself. With the internet woven into the fabric of our lives,
there is simply no excuse for parents not doing due-diligence
research on any acting camp they are considering. A little
research time, up front, can save you a lot of money, effort,
and disappointment later.
After your children have started their first camp, make sure
that they are having fun. If not, first try finding a
better-suited program and see if that resolves the issue. If
not, you may need to consider the fact that acting may not be of
interest to them at that point in their lives. If that is the
case, and the situation is handled carefully, it may well become
one as they get older. Forcing the issue now will virtually
guarantee that your child will never enjoy the art. If there
isn’t a fit, back off and give them some time. Find out what it
was about the camp experience they didn’t like. More
importantly, find out what things (even if only a few) they
actually did like about the camp. Pay attention to these
answers. There is a good chance that, armed with this
information, you can research other camps that may be better
suited to your child’s tastes and artistic needs. Find a
different camp, try again next year, and until then don’t push
or make a big deal out of it.
Be Involved: Acting is a passion and, like flame, it needs fuel
in order to burn. A parent’s support and involvement has no
equal as that fuel. Acting Camp is about far more than just what
happens during the time your child attends. What happens before
and after camp is as important as the camp itself. Furthermore,
if you have an uninterested attitude towards your children’s
pursuits then their attitude will soon follow your own. Help
them prepare for the camp experience beforehand. If you have
done your research, then you are well-versed in what your
children will be learning and doing. Help them feel prepared for
it and they will have the kind of fun that only self-confidence
brings. After Camp is over, spend a lot of time revisiting what
they experienced and learned. Often, there are exercises and
drama games that can be fun for the whole family to recreate.
Children look to their parents for validation. Be that
validation for your young actor or actress and you have armed
them well for success.
Be Selective: Acting Camps are as varied as the children who
attend them. Take the time to research, research, research. If
your children are new to the art, look for fun-filled camps that
focus more on the enjoyment of the experience than the knowledge
gained. As your children progress, they will want, as well as
need, more challenges for their minds. Complacency destroys
drive, and an unchallenged mind can hardly avoid becoming
complacent. Acting Camp should always be fun, but as your
children grow they will develop a sense of pride in their craft
and will be eager to take the challenge to the next level. Do
your homework and be prepared to provide that challenge in their
next camp.
Preparing For the Next Step: Eventually your children (and I use
that term loosely here) will be ready to move on to acting
school. As you have watched and participated with your children
in their acting youth, you’ll no doubt have picked up on where
their artistic talents and drive really lie. Research schools
that have well-respected programs, and degrees, in those areas.
This next step is an expensive one, so doing your research here
actually does pay. Just as acting camps have helped form your
children’s creative foundations, so acting schools will take it
to that next, and this time, professional level.
