New Developments in The Soft Fruit Industry Conference - Well Pict European

If we had had a few more sunny weeks during this past summer, this year’s conference would probably have been as buoyant as previous years. The conference normally starts with a review of how well the marketing companies have done in satisfying their customers, focusing on growth and market share. This year, the format was a little different with Laurence Olins extending his role as chairman of British Summer Fruits to the conference platform. A good move on his part, allowing several marketing companies to conduct a review and preview of the major soft fruit crops.

Under this format, Lochy Porter illustrated how production growth in raspberries had exceeded the sales achieved. While I am sure that BSF will look to see how to promote and market the 2005 crop more constructively, this probably still leaves a surplus of production during the peak weeks. The whole industry has to carefully consider responding to calls for growth without reference to the volume of crop produced.

Technology will provide more solutions to maintaining a successful industry than all the BOGOF promotions we could ever squeeze into a year. So how apt that the opening talk was given by Colin Gutteridge, the chief executive of East Malling Research. We have been the envy of the world for our agricultural research; as Defra withdraws its funding we should look to see how we develop our technical capabilities. EMR wants to build its future on being an exemplary contractor delivering excellent science. In the past, the number of peer-approved scientific papers published may well have measured this. For the future, will it be helping determine what we can achieve from fruit crops, how we develop these opportunities and a method of funding? The cost of EMR is small when set against the value of our industry’s opportunities and the further down the supply chain we collect the funding the more focused it can be on delivering excellent science.

Over the past few years the conference organisers have tried to ensure the program contains good, grower-friendly papers; I believe this year they were successful. In particular Andrew Cranston’s ‘Biennial cropping of raspberries’ round robin session was well researched and delivered. As an advocate of high beds, I thoroughly appreciated Russell Duggan’s description of his experiences in creating these in the UK; getting a good match of machinery was always going to be the solution.

Every time I see a new delivery of tunnel plastic or an artic load of packaging I think, ‘land-fill’. Plastics have changed our industry as much as varieties and fertigation and Brian Sanders’ paper on plastic recycling certainly adds hope that we can improve our environmental credentials.

With the recent publication by Reading University and EMR of their work on gene mapping it is comforting to know there is research funding at that level. While at the same time the EMR report on ‘Enhancing fruit quality using reflective mulches’ is a good example of both applied agronomy development and product development. As we have seen this year, nothing promotes our product quite like a good health or lifestyle label.

All in all a good conference and our thanks to ADAS and EMR for organising the event.

In order to bet, you’ll probably want to visit a Web sportsbook, i.e. a setup which accepts Web sportsbook. In the U.S., we have four states where to go for sports gambling legally, but semi-legally you can do it everywhere assuming that you can hunt out a bookie AND you’re a legal adult. Payday Loans

There are literally thousands of payday loan providers. There are commercials everyday on the radio, television, on billboards, on-line and in newspapers and magazines. Even though there are some laws, these businesses are virtually unregulated which leaves a lot of room for adverse situations to occur. Although the loans are readily available, they are not a fiscally responsible thing to use. Beware, these type of loans can become overwhelming. The Truth in Lending Act requires full disclosure of the finance charge (the dollar amount) and the APR, or annual percentage rate (the cost of credit on a yearly basis.) To avoid disclosing very high interest rates, a lot of these lenders refer to the costs as fees.

According to numerous accounts, these institutions prey on the less fortunate who end up on a debt treadmill. They can’t repay the full amount of the principal, so they end up renewing the loan over and over again. Most payday lenders charge anywhere from 10% to 25% per week! That can really add up over the course of a year. Some states are trying to legislate maximum charges and repayment plans that will allow the payment of the principal over time, like a four paycheck period, so consumers don’t get stuck only paying for the interest on an on-going basis.

Predatory lending in the form of a payday or paycheck loan, also known as a cash advance is one of the most expensive ways to borrow money. Other expensive practices include using pawnshops, rent-to-own shops and check cashing establishments. There are other ways to borrow money that are much less expensive.

Only 1% of people who take out payday loans are able to pay it back and walk away. 90% of people who take out payday loans refinance at least 5 times per year and more than 5 million new people are trapped on this debt treadmill every year. If you are currently caught on this treadmill, don’t hesitate to seek help. Talk to your local Better Business Bureau, consumer protection agency to find out if there are any complaints against the lender and then contact a consumer credit counseling agency to see what your options are.

An alternative to all of the predatory lending practices, high check cashing fees, title loans and rent-to-own dilemmas would be to establish a relationship with your local bank, savings and loan or credit union. If you have an account , either savings or checking, at any one of those institutions you don’t have to pay to cash your paychecks or tax return check, you even have the option of having your checks directly deposited to your account! You can save money and actually borrow from these institutions at a more reasonable rate when necessary.

If you need a loan, avoid getting ripped off and get the best interest rate by checking with three lenders and comparing just how much it is going to cost for the loan. Check them out BEFORE signing any documents. Ask friends and relatives about any experiences they may have had with that particular lender. Check with the Better Business Bureau in your area to see if there are any recorded complaints. Check with local or state consumer protection agencies to see if they have any complaints on record. Ask a lot of questions. It may seem easy to get the money, but remember, it must be paid back. If you take good care of your money today, it will take care of you later on in life.

The Payday Stop (paydaystop.com) is your one-stop resource for cash advance loans, paycheck information and payday loan info.

Gun Control? How About Crime Control Instead?

The second amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees every American the right to bear arms. Has any law ever been so ambiguous? What are arms? What does it mean to bear them? At least with the first amendment we know exactly where we stand: Freedom of speech. It couldn’t be any clearer. But, the right to bear arms leaves the second amendment open to different interpretations. We need gun permits to carry a concealed weapon. Do we need knife permits? No. Yet both can, and often do, cause death. We can own a gun, or a rifle, or a sub-machine gun, or a machete, and dozens of other tools to kill, even our own bare hands. So, gun control is a debate in our country that makes no sense unless you broaden the ban or acceptance to include all instruments of death.

According to Population Stats, www.xist.com, America has the highest crime rate in the world. Everyday 30 people in the United States are murdered by a gunshot. That means 11,000 people. However, there are more than 25,000 murders each year in the United States. In other industrialized countries, Germany has 381 each year, France 255, Great Britain 68, Australia 65, and Japan 39. Based on population to make it a fair assessment, it turns out to be guns in America murder 1 out of 25,916 people every year. Compared to Canada where the amount is 1 out of 190,387, and 1 out of 864,546 in Great Britain, and only 1 out of 3,254,508 in Japan, America is the killing field of the world.

Gun expert Robert J. Spitzer, political science professor at SUNY Cortland and author of the book The Politics of Gun Control points to America’s ‘mixed ethnicity.’ “Our diverse cultural background, composed of many different ethnic, religious, social, and other groups leads to inter-group rivalries, suspicion, hatred, fear, and sometimes violence,’ Professor Spitzer said. “Most other Western nations, by comparison, are more homogeneous than the U.S.”

Which brings us back to the thesis that America does not need a gun control law; it needs a crime control law.

The number one concern in America today is safety: Safety from terrorists, safety from drugs and violent drug dealers, safety from gangs, and safety from those whose evil ways affect our lives and our children’s lives everyday. However, we have no safety of which to speak. Our police departments are as overwhelmed by the size of the enemy as are our troops in Iraq. Without safety, we are prisoners of our own society. Safety and security are more important than any other issue, for, without it, we cease to live. We merely exist. We must first feel safe, and be safe, before we can think about curing our other ills. With 14,000 of the homicides each year being committed without guns (11,000 with), we must look at the bigger picture.

We must build more maximum-security prisons. Enough so that everyone convicted of first-degree homicide, or of a felony three times, is sent there for the rest of their life, without any chance of parole. (There is no reason to spend millions of dollars on each death row prisoner’s appeals that last ten years or longer when it has been proven not to be a deterrent and when housing them is substantially much less expensive.)

Within a federal partnership with select American manufacturing companies, these companies for the work they would be required to do would pay these prisoners minimum wage. The product they create would then be infused into mainstream American commerce. In return for these jobs, the prisoners would pay the government for their room and board, and any security, medical, and utility fees. If the prisoner has any dependents, their paycheck would reflect that deduction. Cut off from society, these prisons would be a society of their own. Away from us forever.

Crime control, rather than a gun control, is a stricter and more effective deterrent than the failed alternatives. It would not just deter murder with guns, it would deter murder with any type of weapon, as well as rape, aggravated assault - ALL felonies. It would reduce crime and get these criminals off America’s streets once and for all, saving the American taxpayer substantially in law enforcement: Money that will instead be used to build and staff these new prisons. Our safety is what we have to take care of - what we must take care of - before we do anything else. We owe it to our children.

We teach our children to have pride in America. We teach our children safety first. We teach our children about good and evil, right versus wrong. What must our children be thinking when they see murder after murder on the news, and walking the streets with the fear of a drive by shooting, or of being abducted? We are raising a society born of fear and mistrust. This is why we need a stricter crime bill. This is why we must - we have no other choice - take back our country from these criminals.

Yes, Americans should be able to have handguns in their home for protection, as long as it is responsibly locked up and away from children. Yes, Americans should be able to have rifles to hunt for food. However, these are still weapons of destruction and they must be registered with personal background checks. There is absolutely no need or reason for any person, other than law enforcement and the military to have assault weapons that are aimed to violently kill masses of people. We must compromise through common sense. We must understand and follow the true intent of our forefathers when they penned the second amendment to the Constitution.

All it takes is the determination, the moral strength of our elected representatives, to enact tougher laws, so we can finally take back our country and make it a safe haven once again for every American man, woman, and child.

Sugar Gliders As Pocket Pets

Most people love their pets and will always ensure their comfort. Pets make good company, and it is essential to take excellent care of all of them. Whatever is fascinating about your pet should make you take good care of it. Every pet needs to feed well, so understanding what your pet feeds on will help you follow the correct procedures to feeding it correctly.

In the case of sugar gliders, sugar gliders are omnivorous. For modern sugar gliders and pocket pets different feeding habits are required. There are a number of commercially processed foods for them that come in the form of pellets.

Sugar gliders need a considerable amount of fruits and vegetables, since they enjoy eating them a lot and so they can get their calcium requirements. If the food is not available, then you will need to substitute for it with cat food, but it has to be of a low fat variety, and also do not use too much - just enough until you get the recommended food.

Sugar gliders are used to warm climate, so when preparing your housing facility, take into consideration that they will need to be kept warm and dry. Another thing about sugar gliders is that they are very active, hence a lot of space is needed. Make the cage spacious enough and provide them something that they can hang on because they naturally like hanging.

Sugar gliders suffer from various diseases that are treatable: skin problems is one of them. They do not need vaccines, but it is important they be examined regularly so that if there is any disease it can be detected early and treated.

Another mobile handset in Review (the Nokia 1200)

Strangely the Nokia 1200 has not sold too well, which is a pity as it is a very good mobile phone. With the 1200 Nokia have produced a phone which is quite basic for a entry level phone. Like other similarly priced models from Nokia the design is quite modern and would appeal to a very wide range of customers.

The screen is a Monochrome graphics. Compared to competitors phones currently available the Nokia 1200 is very compact and easy to carry. This handset is available in, Blue and Black. The 1200 is 77 g in weight. A Standard battery, Li-Ion 700 mAh (BL-5CA) battery cell is fitted to the Nokia 1200. The Nokia 1200 has a battery usage of 390 hrs reserve charge and talk time of 7:00. The 1200 is compatible with 2G GSM 850 / 1900 - US version . Polyphonic (32 channels) ring-tones are enabled on the Nokia 1200 including a vibrating tone . There are also a number of additional features on the 1200 like , Built-in handsfree, Calculator, Currency converter, Flashlight and Calendar.

Although this is quite a recent model, the Nokia 1200 faces really stiff competition. Because of this it is fairly easy to find some great bargains on this handset.

Cell phones are now a basic essential that large numbers of people do not make the effort for the best price, despite losing money. Because it is so easy to find a mobile phone on the high street, or even a superstore or gas station at competitive prices then often it is not worth making the additional effort trying to find a bargain. The point these people have not figured out is that most of the great bargains are only offered on the Internet, where massive discounts can be achieved from your desk. By looking at a mobile cell phone comparison site is not only the easiest but is also the cheapest means of finding a mobile phone.

Manufacturing Wind-Powered Vehicles Discussed

In the future we will have cars, which are powered by wind. Some of these cars will be hybrids or combination propelled vehicles where wind will be one of the components and indeed there may even be pure wind-powered vehicles at a later date, as the technology gets better. But how can we mass-produce these wind-powered vehicles of the future using current manufacturing technologies of today?

Well as far as manufacturing these vehicles professionally, this is not so difficult as it might seem. I believe a modern Seadoo factory, semi robotic assisted would suffice. Of course to have production rates this high, means you need massive amounts of buyers too so before you start you must consider the order numbers. So, provided the sales teams and promotional teams could enlighten the masses and spark intrigue this could be done on a large scale. As a marketer myself this does not seem so difficult and as long a gasoline prices continue to be $3.00 and over you can bet that people would want to look into the wind-powered cars.

There are of course other issues as well such as the price of the cars must be within reason for the average consumer and the fuel savings of the assisted wind-powered cars or partial wind-powered hybrid vehicles would need to be significant to make it all worth while for the buyers. And this comes way before the manufacturing considerations even though we need to know our costs to produce them prior to figuring out what we can sell them for. Consider all this in 2006.

One of the Keys To Your Health and Fitness: Try Patience On For Size

I must make a confession. I am impatient.

In fact, I am the most impatient person I know. I’m not proud of it, but it is the truthjust ask those people who know me the bestmy three children, my mother, and my teammates, Diane and Katy.

They are so loyal that you might have to torture them so get the truth out of them, but, trust me, they well know the impatient side of me.

Well, this weekend I was tested with my 10,000th lesson in patience. I just hate those life lessons sometimes, don’t you? You’d think I’d learn this lesson after a while so I wouldn’t have to repeat it so often. Apparently, I have a ways to go (ahem!).

Long story short, I went skiing in Colorado this past weekend and missed my first flight home - oh, yeah, very dumb but true. So I had to fly stand-by. Scary thought, huh?

Whew - I had no problem getting from Vail to Denver. But the second leg of my trip to Seattle was completely booked and, worse, overbooked. In fact, all the flights from Denver to Seattle were completely booked until late that night.

The United person told me there was no way I’d get on the next flight (or the next one after that) home.

Mad at myself, I said a couple of choice words, like “darn it!” or something close to that! J!

I went to the gate anyway. I waited and waited and waited for the next flight. Waiting for this impatient person doesn’t happen to be her strongest suit.

I picked up my stuff to leave to find another airline home.

But, some voice deep inside said, “Be patient, Leslie, just be patient and wait.” So for once I listened. I sat down to wait some more.

Then my heart sank. You knowthat heart in your stomach feeling. They announced an overbooked flight and asked for 5 volunteers to give up their seats.

That was it. No point in sticking around. I picked up my stuff one more time to leave. I started walking away to try to find another way home.

But that voice piped up for the second time, “Leslie, be patient. Just wait.” So I sighed, put my stuff down, and plopped myself one more time back into my seat. I waited some more.

Another announcement: “We are still overbooked. We desperately need 5 more people to give up their seats.”

Okay, this time I couldn’t help myself, the tears sprung to my eyes. It was hopeless. Absolutely hopeless.

There was no way, no how, I’d get on that flight, and, not only that, now the next flight was overbooked as well, by ten people. I moaned out loud. I’d never get home.

I spoke to an agent, and she confirmed my fears. She said there was no way any stand bys would get on that flight, nor the next one.

Now I was totally down in the dumps.

For the third time, I picked up my stuff. This time I walked down the long corridor toward reservations to try to catch another flight home.

And then that pesky voice bugged me one more time, “Leslie, be patient. Go back, sit down, and just be patient.”

Amazingly enough, I listened. I walked back to the gate, sat down, and watched all the people board the plane.

I tried to stay calm, even if my hope had vanished.

The crowd of people disappeared on the plane, and there were a few of us stand-bys waiting. Just waitingI still didn’t know why I was still there.

It was hopeless.

Then this woman gets on the loud speaker. She called someone’s namenot mine. That person didn’t show up. Then I hear, “Would Van Romer come to the podium?”

I couldn’t believe my ears. I sprung up out of that chair, and they hustled me down the walkway to claim that last seat on the plane. When I stepped aboard, everyone clapped and cheeredlike I had done something extraordinary.

Well, to me, I had done something extraordinary. I had actually waitedsomething very difficult for me to do, especially with the odds facing me.

As soon as I settled in my seat, my eyes leaked one more time as I pondered the life lessons that I had just been gifted with:

#1: Listen for and listen to your inner voice. It speaks the truth. It will always guide you in the right direction.

#2: Be patient. Whether you are waiting for a plane or making healthy food and lifestyle changes (yes, always back to thatyou, too, know me well), it takes time and lots and lots of patience.

You will get off track. You will take detours. You will get stuck in potholes. You will face mental battles. You will doubt. You will even give up. That’s a given.

Patience with yourself will help you rise to the challenge of getting back on track once again and enable you to thrive from better food and lifestyle choices, one baby step at a time.

#3: No matter what, no matter how hard things get, there is always hopealways.

You never know what lies around the bendyou just can’t see around bends. But you can hope.

So, my dear friend, if your goal is to be active and purposeful for a long life, then stay the course of health- and life-supporting choices.

Listen to your inner voice, be patient with yourself, and, as long as you are breathing, never, ever give up hope.

This time, your flight through life, not just a flight home, depends on it.
