There are so many sports that people are involved in these days. No wonder sports gear becomes one of the top search items. The term “sports gear” implies a variety of sport related things - from clothing and footwear to equipment and accessories. Protective gear
For those participating in active sports protective gear is essential as they are most prone to injures. For every sport there is specific and appropriate protective equipment. And, of course, there are certain accessories you cannot do without if you are in for a particular sport. Imagine snowboarding without a board or playing golf without a club and a ball.

Ask any disabled athlete if they would jump at the chance to
compete against able-bodied athletes, and they would probably
give you an emphatic “Yes!” Whether it’s crossing the finish
line in a track meet, or kayaking on the river, having the
opportunity to participate in the same athletic activity as an
able-bodied person is the goal of disabled athletes everywhere.
That’s also the goal of World Wheelchair Sports (WWS), an
organization dedicated to providing outdoor activities for
people with mobility impairments. Founded in 1990 and based in
Eugene, Oregon, WWS believes physical fitness is vital to
everyone, regardless of disability. People of all ages
throughout the Pacific Northwest take part in track and field,
road racing, cycling, kayaking, and other sports and
recreational activities.
Best of all, many of these activities have been set up to allow
disabled individuals to compete with and against their
able-bodied peers. The track program, led by WWS Executive
Director and former Paralympic track coach Kevin Hansen, has
produced many Olympic and Paralympic medallists who have set
world and national records.
“Some of our junior athletes have competed with their standing
peers at regular high school track and field meets, and have
earned Varsity letters,” Hansen explains.
Over the past several years, WWS has coordinated various
wheelchair track events, including the first ever exhibition
race at the 2002 State High School Track Championships, and the
annual Oregon Regional wheelchair track and field championships.
Another sport which allows disabled athletes to join their
able-bodied counterparts is sailing. WWS, in conjunction with
Disabled Sailing of Oregon, offers both accompanied and solo
sailing activities and lessons.
“We currently have two boats in our program,” Hansen says. “One
is a 21-foot keelboat shared with the local Sea Explorer troop.
The other craft is a 25-foot Santana 525 sloop purchased in 1999
with a grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust.”
Wheels In Nature, or WIN, brings children and adults in
wheelchairs together with those who aren’t through muscle
powered outdoor adventures. Each summer, WIN conducts youth
camps in kayaking, wheelchair court sports and racing, sailing,
fishing, hand cycling, and a special Arts In Nature Day. Longer
outings include day trips to wildlife refuges and overnight
campouts in some of Oregon’s national forests.
Funding for WWS is provided through membership and entry fees,
donations, and grants. Members come from many different
backgrounds and levels of disability. Hansen, who became a
quadriplegic following a snow skiing accident, thought his
athletic days were over until he was able to acquire one of the
first lightweight aluminum sports chairs to be mass-produced in
the U.S.
“That chair got me into road races and track meets, and was the
first of many equipment upgrades,” he says.
Some participants are older people who suffered a stroke or
severe arthritis, while others were born with disabling
conditions that left them paraplegics or double amputees. But
thanks to the programs of World Wheelchair Sports, these
individuals can experience the thrill of athletic competition,
or the freedom to enjoy recreational activities in a more
relaxed environment. The chance to share these experiences with
those who are not in a wheelchair gives them an even greater
feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment.

I know what many of you are thinking reading the title of this article. I also thought the same once. It cannot be done! Attaining a stronger, visible, set of abdominal muscles has always been a common goal in people’s fitness training programmes and yet, paradoxically, many (most) of these people never actually achieve this goal.
Being involved in the fitness industry I see the same problem over and over again. The problem can be spelled out like this.
M-A-C-H-I-N-E-S!
Now, while there is nothing innately wrong with abdominal equipment, it does bring with it a whole host of potential problems. One of the most prominent is that people simply do not use the equipment correctly. Another is that they erroneously believe that somehow the machine will do half the job for them!
A third problem is that to some extent abdominal cradles, and the assortment of similar cradle designs, are essentially lifting your head for you thus eliminating the need for that much effort.
There is a way to work the abdominal region however that requires little movement, but that is highly effective, as the emphasis is purely on you to put in the effort without a machine in sight!
This method involves the use of deep focused breathing whilst squeezing (with varying degrees of intensity) your abdominal muscle. To some it seems too simple and yet, performed daily and with gusto, it is a wonderfully natural and invigorating exercise that promotes tighter abdominals and, as an added bonus, aids in strengthening the internal organs.
Try the basic exercise below each day for the next week and feel the benefits.
1.Stand (or sit) comfortably.
2.Inhale into your belly (not your chest) and feel it expand.
3.Once full with air, being your exhale, and squeeze your abdominals at the same time.
4.Do not rush this exhalation. It should be smooth with no impediments. A good way to perform this exhale is through pursed lips.
5.Repeat at least ten times.
Note - Do not squeeze and try to force the air out while holding the breath. Breathing exercises such as this may be dangerous. Ideally, perform where fresh air is circulating.
Having experienced this you should be feeling great! Your abdominals will have been exercised, you will have breathed deeply, and energised yourself in as little as ten breaths!
It is worth saying that you should not utilise one hundred percent muscular contraction in your first attempts at working your midsection this way. It may lead to injury. Instead, focus on incrementally adding tension as you become more proficient at it.
There are many other methods for working the midsection that one can do without machine based, or standard movements, but as a start the above exercise should provide you with food for thought on how one can get a great core workout in without having to wait in line at the gym for the abdominal cradles to be free!

Every golfer wants to know the best golf driver tip. I hate to
disappoint you but there are many great golf driver tips that
could be the key to unlocking monster drives for you. Every
month the golf magazines have dozens of tips in them, but none
of them get to the root of the problem.
If I were to get the opportunity to write a golf driver tip for
a magazine, I’d say something against the norm. Something
teaching instructors wouldn’t want to hear. Do you want to know
what it is? It’s not some quick fix, because they never work
long-term. The “only” thing that works long-term is working on
you.
Your body has a current level of physical ability. I don’t care
how many balls you hit at the range; how many lessons you take;
and what driver you’re swinging. Hitting the ball further takes
an increase in clubhead speed. Period. So hitting more balls or
taking more lessons won’t improve this.
The only thing that can improve clubhead speed is strengthening
your core rotational strength and flexibility. Your core is the
engine to your swing. A weak or inflexible core will not give
you the results you are looking for.
The golf swing a turn back and a turn through. Isn’t that about
as simple as you can make it? If that’s true, why wouldn’t you
improve your body’s ability to rotate quicker and more
powerfully? This is the ticket to longer drives!
There are many simple, yet effective core rotational exercises
you can do in your home, or even office to greatly improve your
clubhead speed and driving distance.
Do you want an easy one you can do right in your chair?
Cross your arms in front of your chest. Sit up tall and erect.
With a fixed head position, rotate to the right and left slowly.
See how far you can go. Do this without stopping. As you feel a
loosening of the core, start to rotate faster and faster. Do
this 20 or 30 times when you think about it and I guarantee
you’ll feel it.
Since time is such a valuable commodity, you’ve got to get
creative. I’ve put together a complete section of my manual that
covers simples stretches and exercises you can do right in your
chair in your office. You can’t get more convenient than that.
I hope I didn’t disappoint you with this golf driver tip.

As tennis fans you may have witnessed the wonderful ongoing rivalries that have taken place between McEnroe and Connors, Agassi and Sampras, Graf and Seles, Federer and Hewitt and so on.
A rivalry can be a blessing or a curse depending on what it brings out in a person.
For young players today, there is a growing focus on becoming world beaters. More and more children hold the dream of someday playing on the circuit for a living. It is a very realistic and noble goal for many players that are coming through the ranks.
However, we must take a reflective look at how these children are developing. I believe there are potential dangers that can be avoided. Dangers that develop from rivalry’s that can turn sour in a heartbeat as someone makes a difficult line call or attempts to psyche out their opponent with needless babble.
1. Competition
The Latin root word for competition means “to conspire together”. In other words, competition by its very nature is designed to bring the best out of each other by being our best. Too often rivalry’s that turn sour become focused on dragging someone else down so that the other can stay above their opponent. This goes against the true meaning of competition and reduces both players to under-development. Neither player gets to experience the growth that can come from being pushed to their limits.
2. Who will you turn to?
A rivalry that turns ugly may come back to haunt those who dream of playing on the tour. The circuit can be a lonely place. As a junior, whenever I travelled interstate we would always buddy up with the people from our home town. We looked for someone that we could talk to or hit with during the time away. What do you think happens when you travel overseas? The same sort of thing. There is no one around except those that you grew up playing against. People from your own country, those opponents that helped you develop your skills, will become the people you will want to turn to when you are on your own.
Think about it…
Who will you hit with? Who’s going to train with you? Who will be there to push you to do that 50th push-up when you want to sit down and watch TV? Who will be there to support you when you’re on the verge of gathering crucial points and prize money?
Create friendships and conspire together to make it onto the circuit. Watch that you don’t burn your bridges, living the lonely life on the circuit because of some childish rivalry that got out of hand when you were 13 years old.
Work together - bring the best out of each other. If there is a suspicious line call - give it to your opponent and find out how good you really are.
If your goal is to be the best you can be, then you are only ever competing with yourself. Opponents are really there to see how much you have improved. Be fair, be honest and buddy up with someone now who shares the same dream as you and together, you can both live out your dreams. Make your rivalry make you better.

For years, there have been baseball purists, baseball writers, and baseball apologists trying to jam the “great” baseball statistics of the past down our throats. Whether it was to take our attention away from the mass infiltration of steroids into the game, or simply because baseball nerds have nothing better to do then spout off Joe DiMaggio’s lifetime batting average in the month of September, the fact is that baseball, more than any other sport, is a game whose history seemingly revolves around the statistics its players produce. This begs the question, do Americans care about the stats because they love the game, or do they care about the game because they love the stats? Might as well ask what came first, the chicken or the egg?
Speaking of steroids, lets touch on that for a moment shall we? Would fans even care about this steroid scandal if it were not for the fact that steroids are affecting the precious homerun record? Ironically, the reason that steroids came into the game of baseball is because the powers-that-be believed, and rightfully so, that fans sought after seeing more homeruns hit and more records broken, most notably Roger Maris and his single season homerun record of 61. To be honest, I think fans would much rather be in the dark on this one, and not know anything about any steroid use or any conspiracy that may have transpired within the game of baseball. Ignorance is bliss, as they say, and record-breaking performances are always enjoyed more if you truly believe that what you are watching was accomplished on the same level playing field of the original accomplishment.
But lets stray from homerun records for a second. There are literally thousands of records in the record book of major league baseball. That means that almost every night on television, you can hear about this player being the first to do this, or this guy approaching this record, and so on. But why is it then, that when a certain player, lets call him Jimmy Rollins, hits in his last 36 games of last year, and picks right up where he left off in his first 2 games of this season, members of the media insist on calling it a two game hit streak? What are they so afraid of? That a player in today’s game might come close to breaking a hallowed record held by a beloved Yankee? Not to mention that Rollins was barely two-thirds of the way there. God forbid that we just sit back and enjoy a record chasing performance for a change, instead of scrutinizing it. Instead people seem to find it necessary to come up with a reason why the accomplishment isn’t good enough and why it just isn’t that same as the record that was set in the first half of the century. Meanwhile, today’s player falls short of breaking the record, because once again the media fails to realize that the reason it has lasted this long is because its kind of difficult to hit in 56 straight games, whether its in one season or over the course of two.
Do you remember when Ichiro Suzuki broke George Sisler’s 84-year old record for most hits in a single season, surpassing 257 hits? I do, but I also remember the constant criticism I heard on the radio for weeks and weeks leading up to when he broke it. “He doesn’t walk enough,” and “He’s playing in 8 more games than Sisler did.” When you start complaining because a person gets on base by hitting the ball instead of walking, because it “doesn’t allow his teammates to see enough pitches in the first inning,” according to Rob Dibble, then I believe you are missing out on greatness for the sake of nitpicking. Are we to believe that George Sisler would collect all of those hits against today’s pitchers? Lets not forget that it’s not only the power hitters that are using steroids in this day and age. Ichiro, who most would agree is not a candidate for a steroid user, has faced pitchers from the steroid era as well. Not to mention the amount of knowledge and even technology that has been at the disposal of pitchers in today’s game. One would argue that this knowledge and technology is at the disposal of hitters too. Well, doesn’t that just prove my point all the more that players like Ichiro and Albert Pujols are clearly better than players 50 and 60 years ago who were not as fortunate as today’s athletes? Athletes are not like money, and you should not adjust them for inflation.
I believe we live in a society where baseball gives entirely too much credit to its players from the early years. Can someone please remind why any player from the 1920’s could possibly be considered the greatest player of all-time? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure Babe Ruth didn’t face any African Americans, Latin Americans, or even a slider for that matter. Have you ever seen an old picture or video clip from when Babe Ruth played? Even the catchers are standing up. Talk about a different game! Yet baseball apologists far and wide will tell you how great he was, and how even today he would hit 50 home runs a year and slug .800. He couldn’t hold a candle to the Arod’s and Pujols’ of today, nor to great players of the 1950’s like Mantle, Mays, and Robinson. But for some reason baseball just can’t let go of the past. Maybe its because they are scared that if they let go of the past, they will have to deal with what’s going on in the present. Regardless of the reason, baseball will continue to suffer because of it. I for one will choose to enjoy what today’s game has to offer, and if a day comes when the best part of baseball is what happened 80 years ago, then ill have to find something else to do with my time during baseball season.
