Tolkien Fans Gathering Offline and Online for Musical Moot

What do you get when you cross hobbits with the Internet? Middle-earth Talk Radio, if you’re two crazy guys from the state of Washington who have been sharing their quest for Gil-galad’s car across the Internet since the beginning of 2009.

Middle-earth Talk Radio is the dream-child of Hawke Robinson, founder of the MERP (Middle-earth Role-playing) Website and the five-year MERPCon. In addition to broadcasting their popular Middle-earth Talk Radio show live from Tolkien Moot, Robinson and Martinez will be co-hosting special guest Heather Downing, who performs as Rehtaeh. Rehtaeh’s speciality, according to her Website, is Elvish Music, which falls right in line with the interests of Tolkien gamers and scholars.

The eclectic mix of scholarship and role-playing gaming is not without its eccentricities. Martinez, himself a noted Tolkien expert who has published three books on Middle-earth, will be cross-examining Downing on his show “Raw Hobbit”, which was introduced at 2009’s Tolkien Moot and is styled on William Shatner’s “Raw Nerve”.

But music fans and Tolkien enthusiasts alike will be treated to three performances by Rehtaeh during the weekend (6 PM PST Friday, 7 PM PST Saturday, and 2 PM PST Sunday). The performances, Middle-earth Talk Radio, and “Raw Hobbit” will all be streamed live to the Internet so fans around the world can enjoy the festivities. Youtube and PRS Reach Licensing Agreement over Online Music Videos

Youtube and the PRS had failed to reach an agreement over licensing fees and as such, a ban was put in place from March of this year (2009). YouTube will pay an undisclosed lump sum to PRS, backdated until January and going through until 2012.

Social media website YouTube and the Performing Rights Society of Great Britain have finally found their way out of the deadlock which saw UK users unable to watch music videos of performers.

PRS spokesperson Andy Shaw commented on the decision to the BBC saying, “We have 60,000 song-writer and composer members and many of them don’t earn very much money at all - 90% of them earn less then £5,000 a year. The money we receive is really their living.”

The organisation collects payments from businesses, broadcasters and private citizens. However they only receive actual playlists from their largest customers (major radio stations etc) meaning that the vast majority of the money goes straight to major label employees.
