Make Cheap Long Distance Calls from Mobile with an Internet Phone

Not being particularly technical or a big follower of the latest technological developments, I was completely unaware until not long ago that it is now possible to use the same ‘VoIP’ technology to make cheap long distance calls from mobile. Mobile VoIP is an advanced technology which has taken by surprise the telephone companies, as well as the mobile phone networks. Its popularity is steadily increasing with the increasing pervasiveness of broadband connections. It has proved to be an astonishing invention which has resulted in a novel mode of telecommunication by exploiting the internet. VOIP is an abbreviated form of Voice Over Internet Protocol.

With the development of mobile VoIP technology, calling your friends and family has never cost so little. It’s now not hard to make a local, long distance, and international calls from your mobile by tapping into a wi-fi connection or using a VoIP phone with a broadband net connection.

One of the most significant advantages of VoIP technology is the multitude of new and advanced features it allows you to enjoy, such as easy to set up conference calling. There are many much improved services offered by the various VOIP service providers. For example, there is voice mail facility, 3-way conference, speed dialling, call forwarding, simultaneous ring, call waiting, caller ID, call return, caller ID block, anonymous call rejection, an interesting feature of do not disturb, and last number dial. A great thing about VoIP is that you can often benefit from a host of additional services for no extra charge.

Survey Gives Orange Highest Marks in Nine Categories

The YouGov Dongle Tracker survey is conducted four times in a year for evaluating the performance of mobile broadband service providers by using various standards like network coverage, prices, quality and simplicity of use. Recently, the survey was conducted for the sixth time and more than four thousand customers using mobile broadband were interviewed in the second week of October.

In the survey, Orange was rated best in nine out of fifteen categories and it topped the survey for the second time in a row. It got the highest points in categories like value for money and ease of use. It has claimed that its new software that warns users as they come close to the usage limit is responsible for people voting in its favour. The other reason for its success is the new monthly bill cap that ensures that the costs of exceeding usage limit do not exceed £40 per month.

Asif Aziz, the Director of Broadband and Home, Orange UK, considers that it is a big accomplishment and honour for Orange to be voted as the best mobile network operator. He said that the motto of Orange is to provide a good quality and reliable connection. Further, Orange has ensured that it gives good value for money with packages costing as less as £5 per month.

Orange’s advertisement campaign with “You’re Covered” as the catch line has been challenged by 3 before the Advertising Standards Authority on grounds that Orange’s claim of having the biggest UK mobile broadband network is wrong.

To compare the current range of mobile broadband prices, see Mobile Broadband Genie’s comparison table for the latest broadband offers, such as mobile internet pay as you go and other top broadband packages.

Can Operators Handle the Burden of Increased Broadband Usage?

The use of mobile broadband is increasing with each passing year. Presently more than 3 million residences in Britain are using this service.

The question that obviously rises is whether operators will be able managing this surge.

Operators are discovering that huge amounts of data being transmitted on a daily basis is causing their networks to slow down. In France, a network operator (SFR) took an approximation of the crisis and stated that people who use a usb dongle to access the internet in their laptops occupy four hundred and fifty times the bandwidth that would have been used if one were chatting on a mobile phone.

Some analysis has led to the conclusion that within 2012, we will see broadband usage crossing the 1 billion mark. With constant innovations in computer programs that require the support of quick and steady connections, people will demand faster mobile broadband connections even more. Presently operators are already stating that they are failing to handle the amount of usage and are suffering losses since people are demanding better network within single tariff structures.

The question that comes up is whether these operators will be able to cope with such growth in usage and demand. The answer is that it will probably be able to do so, because the industry of mobile broadband is seen as a growing one. Already operators are putting in money to bring about better coverage and more stable, steady and quicker connections, and are carrying out experiments on future technologies to bring a radical change in the broadband experience of subscribers.

Ofcom’s New Rules for Mobile Network Operators May Bring Relief to Customers

Ofcom has come up with a new set of rules for network providers to prevent customers from being caught in the web of mis-sold mobile contracts.

In July 2004, mobile network operators had come up with a similar code of practices aimed at battling the rising number of deceiving sales methods. However, the voluntary method could not improve the situation and Ofcom had to step in for a solution.

Ofcom’s new rules make it mandatory for providers - including the mobile broadband operators - to make sure their customers are not hoodwinked. The operators have been asked to provide the customers with all the necessary information that will enable them to make an informed decision on everything from pay as you go mobile broadband, free laptops or contract laptops. The providers are also required to remove unwarranted restrictions on the cashback offers. They also have to keep tabs on local sellers and retailers to make sure all of them are adhering to the rules. The providers are liable to a fine of up to 10 per cent of their relevant turnover, if they fail to meet all the guidelines.

It was embarrassing for the mobile service providers that Ofcom had to make rules on an issue which they could have themselves dealt with. After the rules were proposed in March 2008, the complaints have gone down to 200 from almost 600 a month and now their imposition is likely to bring greater respite to customers. The new regulations mean consumers will no longer be duped into paying for services they do not want or actually receiving the benefits of cashback schemes. It would have been even better if Ofcom had stepped into the matter sooner.

ADSL2+ from BT Could Create Problems for Some Customers

BT’s 20Mb ADSL2+ broadband service may sound like the perfect means to experience high-speed internet surfing, but if reports by PC Pro are to be believed, it can possibly slow down other customers’ download rates.

The slow download speed is a result of the service’s stabilization process. About 40% customers in the UK have upgraded their connections from the “up to” 8Mb ADSL Max service to the 20Mb ADSL2+ service. Although the company is still unsure of exactly how many of its customers will experience a slowdown, it insists that a majority of them will see a marked improvement in broadband speeds.

Speaking to PC Pro, a representative for BT said the company acknowledges the possibility of a few lines facing problems with speeds while operating on the ADSL2+ connections, though the same lines may not have had any trouble on the 8 Mb products. Nevertheless, the company was quick to assure that it has already planned to locate customers with slow download speeds and upgrade them to the 20Mb ADSL2+ products, which will provide them services in line with fixed-rate and IPStream Max products. If you need to know more about your broadband speed, click on broadband check from Broadband Genie to get a snapshot of your current download and upload speeds

The company’s spokesman further clarified that line stability was more important than speed in some applications, and that ADSL2+ will provide refined network operations with the most dependable service and unmatched speed on each line.

TalkTalk Launches Service Targeted at Home Movers

While shifting homes, migrating one’s broadband connection can become a major headache for most home movers. Broadband provider TalkTalk has now taken an important step towards helping customers get rid of this problem, by launching a service that allows home movers to retain their existing broadband connections when they change address.

Earlier, TalkTalk customers who were shifting houses would have had to pay a hefty £120 to get a new broadband connection. The process involved signing up for a 12-month contract with BT at the new address, and then cancelling the same, before it expired, to switch back to TalkTalk. This was a cumbersome procedure that everyone shifting to a non-cable area was forced to undertake.

Thanks to the new Home Mover Service, TalkTalk customers will now be able to migrate their broadband connection at nominal rates of £29.99 for current customers and £59.99 for new customers. For more information on TalkTalk and to compare their services with other UK broadband providers, take a look at a dedicated website.

As the Managing Director of TalkTalk, Wendy Becker says, the last thing customers need when shifting houses is the additional and unnecessary hassle of broadband migration. TalkTalk’s Home Mover Service, which takes on all responsibilities for getting home movers connected to the Internet, takes a huge load off their backs. They also end up saving between £60 and £90 of unnecessary costs.

TalkTalk’s customer support can be contacted at 0870 444 1820 by existing customers, at least 14 days in advance before they shift homes. For new customers, a dedicated hotline for the Home Mover Service has been created at 0800 049 1424.
